Last night it crashed into me in a horribly surreal and yet emphatic and fatal way how much I wish I had kept at least my CPR training up to date, let alone the awesome combat lifesaver skills I had in the Army Reserves.
I was excited to learn that Chicagoland would gain another Planned Parenthood center in Aurora, a fully-functional center. But, if you haven't been paying attention, maybe you weren't aware that the city council old buggers are trying to stop it. I just got this in an email from PP.org, so I thought I'd share. It's nice to know there are alternatives to the Planned Parenthoods currently in Chicago, especially given some of their locations, and the sheer number of people they help.
Just hours ago a federal judge denied Planned Parenthood's request for injunctive relief against the City of Aurora. Today's ruling by Judge Norgle means that Planned Parenthood will be back in court to present additional material, facts and information that substantiate our request for an injunction to open our Aurora health center.
Read Planned Parenthood's complete statement.
What can you do to help fight to keep Planned Parenthood open? Join other Planned Parenthood supporters for a Pro-choice Rally this Tuesday, September 25th, 5:00pm Aurora City Hall! We will provide t-shirts and signs until we run out to anyone who shows up to stand in support of the Aurora Planned Parenthood health center.
This looks like it will an interesting and well spent few hours. I hope I can make it (even though it is farther south of the loop than I would like, hmm). I found it on idealist.org

Used to be I loved having an extra day off. Now I'm just bored.
If I do anything tomorrow, this is what I would like to do:
What: Tammy Duckworth, director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, is the keynote speaker at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
Hundreds of veterans will perform as will the Joliet American Legion Band.
When : 11 a.m. Monday.
Where: 2703 S. Diagonal Road in Elwood off Illinois 53.
WOO! My sister and I are going to see Loreena McKennit tonight at the Civic Opera House! Damn, this came up fast. Tickets are still on sale, for those Chicagoans out there... We are in aisle 4, front and center. Soooo coool...
Working at a library, shelving books, gives one the chance to "discover" some great hidden book-treasures. Here's a sample of what I found. I created a collection for the rest.
Who know that so many great books existed?!
They were always seeking volunteers especially in the children's section. FYI, if you have kids, this is a great volunteer option for them in your community!
"One more reason to come watch Wait Wait Don't Tell Me at the Chase Auditorium...
Cuz Mayor Daley can call the bull dozers any ole' time he wants!"
Or something like that. I couldn't stop cackling witih glee at it.
I love Chicago Public Radio's Wait! ads!
I heard this on American Weekend on WNIJ and nearly died laughing, which was sort of dangerous seeing as how I was driving at the time. Definitely one of those great NPR moments.
While many people prepare to go Easter egg hunting this weekend in Chicago, professionals are gearing up in search of Canadian goose eggs. Over the last 20 years, the geese have been wreaking havoc on the local parks. After volunteers find the eggs, a select team of pros will "handle" the eggs to curb the overpopulation of the geese. Weekend America host Bill Radke speaks with Susan Hagberg, president of Wild Goose Chase, about how these geese have overstayed their welcome.

This might now be my favorite NPR program.
Wild Goose Chase is based out of La Grange, very near my home 'burb.
I was thinking, since Showtime has teamed up with Vox on one project already (Tudors, see Team Vox latest post) why couldn't This American Life join forces, as well?
Hmmm?
